GURGAON: Government schools on Friday concluded their week-long skill assessment exercise (an alternative to annual exams) and organised mega PTMs to update parents about the existing core competencies of students before commencing the new academic session.
Skill passbooks, based on the competency-based assessment of the students in March, were distributed on Friday. These alternatives to report cards did not provide scores or pass/fail gradations, but recorded the competency levels.
Mukesh Kumar, head teacher of Fazilpur Jharsa Government School, said, “The skill passbooks grade the students in terms of level of competency in, say, solving a mathematical problem or fluency in reading and writing English.”
Starting April 1, the schools will commence a new academic session and the teachers will proceed with the lessons depending on average competencies.
These booklets will also note sociocultural and health status along with behavioural patterns to help the teachers understand the psychological state of the students and adopt teaching methods accordingly.
Manoj Lakhra, district coordinator of the FLN programme said, “Since the focus of the previous academic year was to assess the extent of learning gaps among the students and devise mechanisms to bridge them, we overhauled how we teach students in class. Accordingly, we modified our assessment and evaluation process.”
