LUDHIANA: The last day of filing property tax returns witnessed a heavy rush at suvidha centres in all four zones on Friday with Ludhiana municipal corporation earning around Rs 4 crore during the day. As many as 3.55 lakh property tax returns have been filed this fiscal year, which were around 90,000 more than the previous year. The officials claimed that the tax was collected at suvidha centres till late evening and online payment was available till midnight. They are expecting the collection to touch Rs 125 crore mark this year. Last year, the target was fixed at Rs 100 crore, but the MC could generate only Rs 92.84 crore.
Residents faced a bit of difficulty in reaching MC offices due to rain. Traffic jams were also witnessed outside MC zone D office. Officials said from April 1, those who haven’t paid the tax will have to pay 20% penalty and 18% annual interest. Among the defaulters, the police department also paid Rs 1.48 crore in property tax.
