Dy CM: SC didn’t make any comment on Maha govt
Nagpur: Refuting claims about Supreme Court censuring Maharashtra government for its inaction against hate mongers, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday took a dig at the opposition leaders saying “they did not understand how the judicial proceedings took place”.
Fadnavis was responding to the charges by the opposition leaders, including Ajit Pawar who blasted the BJP-Shiv Sena government on the top court’s stinging observations. Pawar called CM Eknath Shinde and Fadnavis to introspect after facing the court’s wrath.
“The apex court has not made any such statement. In fact, when our government apprised the bench of action taken to control the situation, the judges did not initiate contempt proceedings. When solicitor general Tushar Mehta informed the court on how Maharashtra was targeted, the SC did not act against it,” he said.
Pointing out that the judges made a general statement on all states asking them to act against the hate mongers, the deputy CM said the opposition culled out one sentence from the entire proceedings to target the BJP-Shiv Sena government. “A few people have the habit of commenting without doing homework. The top court’s observations were blown out of proportion by them, so there is no need to comment on what they said,” he said.
The Maha Vikas Agahdi constituents targeted the government over reports emerging in the media which said the top court had on Wednesday asked Maharashtra government whether it was impotent to take timely action against hate speech mongers.
A bench comprising Justice KM Joseph and Justice BV Nagarathna was hearing a plea by Shaheen Abdullah from Kerala, claiming the government’s inaction against hate speeches by Hindu groups.
