Thiruvananthapuram: The General Hospital witnessed acute shortage of water such that the hospital authorities had to inform the patients that there will be delay in performing the surgeries. To overcome the crisis the water authority finally had to arrange 10 tankers for the hospital use.
However, the district medical officer denied the reports that the surgeries were affected due to the shortage of water. But according to reports, the hospital authorities had informed the patients and their bystanders that there will be a shortage in the water supply and hence there are chances for a delay in the surgeries.
Since alternate arrangements were made available, the surgeries were not cancelled due to the water shortage, said the district medical officer. The shortage in water supply also affected the day-to-day functioning of the hospital. It is learnt that the health department has given a show cause notice to the hospital superintendent as the hospital has been facing the water shortage since March 29 and no alternate arrangements were made to solve the issue.
There was no water supply since Wednesday after the supply from the Aruvikkara dam was disrupted. Though there are tanks that can store up to two lakh litres of water in the hospital, the crisis developed due to the back-to-back failure in the power supply at the pumping station. Officials from the water authority said steps are being taken to resolve the issue as soon as possible and the supply is expected to be resumed by Thursday night.
