Gujarat Police on Friday arrested eight people for putting up objectionable posters against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in different areas of Ahmedabad. The accused put up ‘Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao’ posters, a day after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) launched a nationwide campaign against PM Modi.

The Ahmedabad Police registered a case against the accused and said the posters were put up in the city in an unauthorized manner.

Following the arrest, Gujarat AAP chief Isudan Gadhvi accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of dictatorship and claimed that the arrests are a sign that the party is scared.

Gadhvi said, Look at the dictatorship of BJP! Aam Aadmi Party workers in Gujarat have been jailed under various sections of the IPC in connection with the posters of Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao! If this is not fear of Modi and the BJP, then what else? Try as hard as you want! Aam Aadmi Party workers will fight, he added.

This comes a week after thousands of posters were put on the walls in the national capital targetting PM Modi. This created a massive uproar in the capital which led to the arrest of six people. Not only, this, the police also registered 49 FIRs in this case.

The Delhi Police stated that the posters were made for vandalizing government property. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal responded to the arrests and claimed that even the British did not arrest anyone who displayed anti-British posters during the independence movement.

He said no FIRs or action were taken by the Britishers against freedom fighters who used to put up posters against them. Bhagat Singh had pasted a lot of posters during the British rule, and not a single FIR was lodged against him, he said.

The AAP’s Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao campaign was launched in 11 languages across the country. Besides English, Hindi and Urdu, posters have been released in Gujarati, Punjabi, Telugu, Bengali, Oriya, Kannada, Malayalam and Marathi as well.

AAP leader Manish Sisodia

The Delhi court on Friday dismissed the bail plea of former Deputy Delhi Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in connection with the now-scrapped liquor policy scam.

A special CBI court in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue headed by M K Nagpal rejected the bail application of the senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader in a CBI case pertaining to the alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy.

Sisodia’s bail plea was rejected by the court even after his lawyers argued that the central probe agency did not find any incriminating evidence against him during the investigation.

Earlier, the court extended the CBI custody of the former education minister of Delhi because it alleged that the minister didn’t cooperate with the CBI team during the interrogation. However, this time Sisodia’s lawyers argued that he cooperated in the investigation and none of the CBI’s searches revealed anything that would require his further custody.

Opposing Sisodia’s bail plea, Advocate DP Singh, a special public prosecutor for CBI, said Manish Sisodia may not be a flight risk, but he is a definite risk who will destroy evidence. A person is a saint till his irregularities and illegalities are not discovered, he added.

The probe agency also claimed that Sisodia said he destroyed phones as he wanted to upgrade them but nothing of that kind happened.

Manish Sisodia is being separately interrogated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the money laundering case linked to the Delhi liquor policy scam.

Sisodia was arrested by the CBI on February 26 and was later arrested by the ED in March 9 in Tihar Jail. Meanwhile, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court extended the judicial custody of Sisodia till April 5.

Gujarat HC imposes Rs 25,000 fine on Arvind Kejriwal for asking details of PM Modi's degree, says it's not needed

The Gujarat High Court on Friday revoked the 2016 order of the Central Information Commission (CIC) directing the Gujarat University to reveal the details of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s MA degree, stating that the information is not needed.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for asking for details of PM Modi’s college degree. The HC directed Kejriwal to deposit the fine with the Gujarat State Legal Services Authority within four weeks.

Responding to HC’s order and the fine imposed, Kejriwal tweeted, Does the country not have the right to know how educated their PM is? They vehemently opposed showing the degree in the court. Why? And those who demand to see their degree will be fined? What is this happening? Illiterate or less educated PM is very dangerous for the country, he added.

Judge Biren Vaishnav, a single judge, quashed the Chief Information Commission’s (CIC) order directing the PMO, Gujarat University, and Delhi University PIOs to provide information about Modi’s graduate and postgraduate degrees.

The Gujarat High Court held that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree and post-graduate degree certificates are not required to be provided by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

PM Modi’s election documents say he graduated from Gujarat University in 1978 and completed his Master’s degree from Delhi University in 1983.

Indore Temple Tragedy

The president and secretary of Indore’s Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple have been booked by the police after the floor of the temple caved in during a religious ceremony on the occasion of Ram Navami on Thursday killing 35 people and causing injuries to at least 14 others.

An India Today report quoting Indore Police Commissioner Makarand Deuskar said that an FIR under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), has been registered against president and secretary of the temple committee in the temple stepwell roof collapse tragedy case

The two temple officials have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, as per the report.

Earlier today, official said that bodies of 35 victims have been have been recovered from the well so far in a joint rescue operation conducted by the Army, and the sleuths of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

Speaking to newsmen at the site of the mishap, Indore District Magistrate Dr Ilayaraja T said a search operation is currently on to locate one person who is still reported missing.

The senior official said the operation, which started on Thursday after the tragedy happened, is nearing completion and a search is underway to trace a missing person.

He said the dead bodies of all the people, barring one person, whose names were in the missing persons’ list, have been recovered and mounds of slit in the well are being removed to locate the missing person.

In an earlier statement, Indore Divisional Commissioner (Revenue) Pawan Kumar Sharma had said that 16 people injured in the collapse have been admitted to a hospital, while two others were sent home after receiving first aid.

Tragedy struck when on Thursday, the slab constructed on top of an ancient ‘bawdi’ or stepwell collapsed during a ‘havan’ programme held during Ram Navami celebrations at Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple in Indore’s Patel Nagar.

The collapse caused several devotees to plunge into the water reservoir below as the temple was built on top of a 20 ft x 20 ft square-shaped stepwell nearly four decades ago.

A massive search and rescue operation was launched on late Thursday evening. Reports quoting eyewitnesses at the site said that a joint team of the Army and NDRF descended deep into the well with the help of a crane and trolley to recover the bodies.

Reports said that a massive crowd of devotees were present in the temple during the havan ceremony and the floor was unable to bear the load and caved in. They said that the temple had been built by coving the ancient stepwell with a slab.
