'Don't know what we're fighting': Rockford alderwoman speaks out as girl fights for life
A day after a 12-year-old girl was shot in the middle of the night in her Rockford home, and details remain scarce.
The girl remains in critical condition, police said. There's been no arrest, and no suspect named.
Rockford alderwoman Karen Hoffman pleaded with residents of her southeast Rockford ward to check their home security cameras from the time of the shooting and share anything out of the ordinary with police.
"Honestly," Hoffman said, "how many cars in a residential neighborhood are rolling around in here at that hour of the morning?"
Police responded shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday to the 2300 block of Wisconsin Road and found the home had been struck by gunfire numerous times. The girl was found in her bed with a life-threatening gunshot wound to her head.

"I don't know what we are fighting," Hoffman said Thursday. "If it is targeted, we can figure out what is going on. We can do some tracing and figure out who had a fight with who."
A random shooting, she said, is more concerning.
"That means there's a crazy person out there. How do you protect yourself from random?"
Hoffman warned against sharing information that could come back and hurt the child, saying police are investigating and residents shouldn't get ahead of them.
"If we start saying, 'Oh. This is a gang house,' and stuff like that and that little 12-year-old comes back, none of the kids are going to want to be around her," she said. "They're going to make it worse on her. So, I just want to be really careful."
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Rockford police at 815-966-2900 or leave an anonymous tip with Rockford Area Crime Stoppers at 815-963-7867.
