SILCHAR: Section 144 has been enforced in Badarpur railway township in
Assam’s Karimganj district following a violent incident in the town on Wednesday night after police went to arrest a wanted criminal.
Sources said a police team team led by Badarpur police station OC Chandan Goswami went to Station Road in Badarpur around 9pm on Wednesday to arrest Ruhul Amin, an alleged wanted criminal, in a police case of the past. Ruhul and a few of his accomplices tried to attack the police after which the police had to fire in the air to control the situation, a senior police official said.
The news of firing spread like wildfire and resulted in tension among locals. Ruhul was then taken in an e-rickshaw to Badarpur police station with the help of a few locals and he was arrested by the police.
A large number of people then converged in front of the police station and raised slogans against the OC alleging that he harassed innocent people. DSP (Karimganj) G D Sharma reached the spot and spoke to the protesters and assured them to look into their complaints.
On Friday, an order was issued by the Assam Police (headquarter), Ulubari, to transfer Goswami to Guwahati.
