The Campbell County Coroner's Office has identified the man whose remains were discovered on Northern Kentucky University's campus earlier this month, officials said.

Gary Randall's remains are believed to have been in a wooded area behind the soccer stadium on NKU's Highland Heights campus for several years, the university said in a Thursday news release.

Randall was not an NKU student, nor was he in any way affiliated with the university, officials said, adding no foul play is suspected, though a cause of death has yet to be determined.

"We want to reassure our students, faculty and staff that Northern Kentucky University is a safe, secure campus. This case was an isolated incident and at no point was anyone on our campus in any danger," Eddie Howard, vice president of student affairs and enrollment management, said in a statement.

Randall's remains were discovered on March 12. NKU police were dispatched after a bystander, who was on campus for soccer activities, found what appeared to be human remains, officials said.

The Campbell County Coroner's Office said Randall's remains were sent to the state medical examiner in Frankfort.

His remains are currently undergoing additional evaluation by a forensic anthropologist, officials said, adding that examination will likely be completed in the next couple of months.
