COIMBATORE: A multi-specialty clinic for transgenders has been set up on the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) premises to provide them medical guidance and treatment for various diseases under a single roof.
Dr A Nirmala, dean, CMCH, inaugurated the clinic on Wednesday in the presence of doctors and transgenders. The clinic would function under the National Health Mission.
The clinic with four beds would function from 10am to noon every Wednesday. Specialist dermatology, plastic surgery, nephrology, ENT, psychiatry, and obstetrics and gynaecology doctors would be available during the period.
Doctors said all treatments would be offered under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. “Soon, sex-reassignment surgery will also be performed at the clinic.”
Dr Nirmala said that the facility would help transgenders avail treatments without any hassle under one roof.
A doctor said the state government had taken a policy decision to introduce the facility in all major government hospitals. “A few medical college hospitals already house a similar facility.”
