Sky-high prices hit Barak Valley during Ramzan & Basanti Puja
SILCHAR: Prices of essential commodities, especially vegetables and fruits, have skyrocketed in the Barak Valley as Muslims are observing the holy month of Ramzan and Hindus celebrating Basanti Puja.
The spiralling prices have burnt a hole in the pockets of customers who went to the different Silchar markets, including Fatak Bazar, Rangpur, Tarapur, College Road, and also nearby Sonai and Sonabarighat.
According to the retail outlet vendors in these markets, not a single vegetable cost below Rs 80 per kg, while no fruit was sold below Rs 150 per kg.
“Twelve bananas are usually sold at Rs 25. But a shopkeeper in Rongpur market in Silchar was not ready to sell the same at less than Rs 60 today,” a customer said. The residents have sought the intervention of the district administration and food and civil supplies department.
