1 die, 7 injured in pile-up at naka check in Kolkata

KOLKATA: One person died and seven others were injured when four vehicles - a mini-truck, an SUV, a police van and a cop's bike - crashed into one another at the JM Avenue-Beadon Sreet crosing in north Kolkata around 2.15am on Wednesday. The accident happened when a naka check against drink-driving was going on at the crossing.
Kalam Molla (45), a resident of Rajabagan in Port area, died on the spot. Of the injured, four were travelling in the truck and three others in the SUV. Two truck passengers Fardeen Mollah and Ekramul Mollah (31) were shifted to a private hospital in Alipore after their conditions worsened.
The SUV driver, Subhojit Mahapatra (26) of Muchipara, has been arrested. "The SUV jumped the signal at the crossing and hit the truck. Then both the vehicles hit the police van and bike," said an officer.
