RANCHI: Continuing with the opposition’s tirade against the ruling
BJP at the Centre, the central spokesperson of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), Akhilesh Pratap Singh, on Wednesday said the saffron camp’s attempts to silence and intimidate
Rahul Gandhi on key issues concerning the country will backfire for the Narendra Modi government.
He said despite the all-round attack by the Modi government against Gandhi and other opposition leaders through the “misuse” of central agencies, Congress will continue to fight with more vigour to save the country’s democratic system.
Addressing a press conference here themed on the ‘Democracy Disqualified’, he said, “Modiji and his government know that the issues raised by Rahul Gandhi in connection with the Adani Group’s financial transactions are genuine and will expose their wrongdoings. The BJP government is aware of Modi’s ‘misconduct’ in privatising the country’s public assets in favour of one particular private entity. In times of political intolerance, only Rahul Gandhi has been constantly asking the PM to reply on the
Adani Group issue. And the Centre is so rattled that it is going all out to try and silence his voice. But they will never succeed. Congress, which ousted the British to free India, will again fight back this tide.”
He added, “If the government has nothing to hide, then why is it not agreeing to form a JPC to probe the Adani Group despite several opposition parties now demanding it in Parliament and outside? On the contrary, it is trying to stifle opposition voices at every possible level.”
Notably, Congress has been running a nationwide campaign, titled ‘Democracy Disqualified’, in the wake of Rahul Gandhi’s recent disqualification as Lok Sabha MP after his conviction in a defamation case taken up in connection with a remark he made against the PM in the run-up to the 2019 general election.
