NOIDA: A 33-year-old woman allegedly got cheated of over Rs 12 lakh online on the promise of earning easy money from home by giving ratings to movies on a website.
The woman, a resident of Supertech Capetown society in Sector 74, submitted her complaint at Cyber Crime Police Station on Tuesday.
“In January, I got a text on Telegram saying I can earn money sitting at home. An online link, www.alamoratel.com/login, was attached. The text said I had to click on the link and give ratings to movies and money would get credited to my bank account. I was then added to a Telegram group, carrying messages from 25 people, giving testimonials that they have earned thousands through the link,” her complaint read.
She claimed she received instructions to pay Rs 10,000 and click 30 times on the link for rating 30 movies, and double the amount would get transferred to her. “After paying Rs 10,000, I got instructions to pay the same amount again. Other people in the Telegram group assured me that sometimes, we have to pay twice to double the amount we paid. In various transactions, I spent Rs 12 lakh over three months till March 15,” her complaint read.
Every time the woman asked for a return, she got instructions to pay Rs 30,000 or 42,000 to get her money back. “In some cases, I got the message that I had a ‘superior rating’, so transferring money to my account got delayed. I request the police to take action against the suspects and help me retrieve my money,” the woman said.
Police said that following her complaint, they filed a case under relevant sections of the IT Act. “We have launched an investigation in the case,” said Reeta Yadav, the in-charge of Cyber Crime police station, Sector 36, Noida.
