U’khand youth stabs Goan for saving Dutch from sexual attack
Panaji: An Uttarakhand bartender of a Mandrem hotel broke into the guest room of a Netherlands woman, attempted to sexually attack her and later, redirecting his fury, knifed a Goan Good Samaritan who had saved the woman.
The 31-year-old Goan, Eurico Dias and the Netherlands tourist were later taken to hospital. The bartender, Abhishek Verma, 26, has been arrested.
North Goa superintendent of police (SP) Nidhin Valsan said that the accused has been arrested in connection with the alleged assault, exerting criminal force on the woman with the intent to outrage her modesty, attempt to murder, and trespass.
The Netherlands woman, 45, arrived in Goa on Wednesday. Valsan said that on Thursday, the FIR was registered based on the complaint of the survivor.
She said in her complaint that on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, she was sleeping alone in her room at the hotel. She said she saw lights being switched on in her room at around 2am.
Valsan said that she immediately screamed for help. The accused tried to muffle her screams. “The accused threatened to harm her if she screamed,” Valsan said. He said that Dias, who was near the room, responded to the cries for help.
“On spotting the local person, the accused ran away,” Valsan said. “Thereafter, the accused returned with a knife and attacked both the local person and the woman. He later fled from the room.” The complainant and Dias sustained injuries.
Pernem police arrested Verma. “The knife used in the crime has been recovered,” Valsan said.
