THANE: Nearly six out of every 10 Covid patients reported in Thane district since the start of this month are from Thane city, hence, raising concern for the local administration that is now working to contain any further spread here.
Municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar said the high numbers are due to increased volume of testing and tracking of suspects with symptoms.
The corporation screens an average of 2,500 suspects daily, he said, adding that nonetheless the administration is stepping up safety measures to contain any possible spread.
A cursory glance through the data made available by the district administration shows that total 658 patients have been tested positive here since March 1 of which 414 or nearly 62% are from Thane city. The city has also reported the highest ratio of deaths — three of four who died due to Covid in the district in the same period.
As per the records, March 22 saw the highest volume of patients following which the numbers shrunk only to increase to 46 by March 26. Luckily, the volume of critical patients in the city is less as the ICU and ventilator beds show zero occupancy as on Tuesday, officials informed.
When contacted, Bangar said that the corporation was all geared up to tackle any rise in cases and hinted that the infection this time may be spreading easily but wasn’t critical.
“We are conducting more tests and analysing the positivity ratio on a daily basis. We have appealed to the residents to get themselves tested if they face any symptoms so that they can be treated early. We are well prepared to face the situation,” Bangar said.
Last week Thane recorded three Covid deaths. Meanwhile, total 343 people were tested positive for Covid in Maharashtra.
