Mettupalayam Road New Bus Terminal is a new stage now; fare brought down by Rs 3
COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore district administration has enforced the Mettupalayam Road New Bus Terminal as a new stage on the Gandhipuram-Mettupalayam route, which was first announced in 2015.
The bus terminal was built in 2010 with an intention to terminate buses in Mettupalayam route to prevent them going to Gandhipuram as it adds to the city’s congestion. But private bus operators approached court and got orders to continue to operate bus services from Gandhipuram.
The district collector in 2015 notified the Mettupalayam Road New Bus Terminal as a new stage, but private bus operators had approached the State Transport Appellate Tribunal. With the tribunal cleared the way recently, transport implemented the rule on Wednesday .
Earlier, passengers boarding at the new bus terminal were forced to pay the same fare one would pay for boarding at Gandhipuram. Now they pay Rs 3 less to reach places such as Mettupalayam, Karamadai, Mathampalayam, Jothi Mills, Periyanaickenpalayam and Puthupalayam. Similarly, passengers coming to the city will pay Rs 3 less if they get down the new bus terminal, say transport officials.
North RTO Sivagurunathan said that he conducted a check in the morning and ensured that all the buses being operated in the route are following the district administration order.
