MANGALURU: Kodagu University, which has been carved out of the four-decade-old Mangalore University, was inaugurated on Tuesday. With this, the MU has proposed to hand over about 150 teaching and non-teaching posts to the new university. The legislative assembly passed a bill amending the Karnataka State Universities Act, 2000 (Karnataka Act 29 of 2001) last September to constitute eight new universities, including Kodagu University.
MU registrar Kishore Kumar CK told TOI, “The department of higher education had asked us to give a proposal on handing over of existing posts at MU to the new varsity. We have now submitted a proposal that includes about 108 non-teaching and 40 teaching posts. The department is yet to finalize our proposal.”
The teaching posts include assistant professor, associate professor, and professor. Whereas non-teaching staff involves all types of human resources that are required to run a university, including posts in the engineering section and finance section.
“The number of teaching and non-teaching staff will be finalized based on the total number of students, courses, and colleges available at the new university. “These posts, which will be handed over to Kodagu University, were created from existing posts, including vacant posts available at the Mangalore University.
The government has not created any new posts for the new varsity since it is a zero-budget institution,” said Kishore. The handing over of the land and other related documents to the new varsity are yet to be completed.
Meanwhile, the concerns regarding the existing teaching and non-teaching staff working in Jnana Kaveri PG Centre, Chikka Aluvara, Somavarpet, and Field Marshal KM Cariappa College, Madikeri, a constituent college of MU, is being sorted out.
MU vice-chancellor PS Yadapadithaya said that staff recruited from MU and posted in colleges at Kodagu will be part of the new varsity. Whereas the staff who have been on deputation in those colleges have been given the freedom to stay back or return to their parent university. All the guest lecturers recruited through MU will also continue their service at Kodagu University. Ashok Sangappa Alur has been appointed as the first vice-chancellor of Kodagu University.
