Goa assembly discusses Sonsoddo legacy waste again
PANAJI: The Goa legislative assembly discussed the Sonsoddo solid waste issue, which has remained unresolved for over two decades, yet again on Wednesday.
While urban health minister Vishwajit Rane said efforts are underway to clear the legacy waste, he admitted that more efforts are needed to handle the monumental problem.
He was responding to the calling attention motion tabled by Curtorim MLA Aleixo Lourenco who mentioned several linked issues and that the council was not doing enough to solve the issue.
“We can discuss this issue under the chief minister and decide what is the way forward,” said Rane.
The problem has also been intensified, with none (councils) want wet waste to be treated in their respective jurisdiction, he said.
All the suggestions, Rane said, given by the members will be considered.
Earlier, GFP MLA Vijai Sardesai said that Sonsoddo has become a disaster.
A disaster management agency will be needed to stop the mountain of waste from crashing to the ground.
The efforts are being made to clear the Sonsoddo’s legacy waste under observation of the high court.
Margao MLA Digambar though admitted that a lot has been done to remove the legacy waste, he said, it should be seen that during monsoon leachates doesn’t flow on the road.
Opposition leader Yuri Alemao also emphasised that the issue needs to be dealt with more seriously.
