KOLAR: Six members of the inter-state 'Irani gang' allegedly involved in 97 cases at different police stations, including those in
Andhra Pradesh, are in police custody. Valuables worth over Rs 13 lakh, including gold, cash and two-wheelers, were recovered from them.
Indulging in extortion and dacoity, the gangsters would pose as police personnel, ask elderly women to take off their gold ornaments as criminals were lurking. After getting them packed in paper, the gang would divert the women's attention and flee with the valuables.
Kolar superintendent of police M Narayana said as many cases were reported in Kolar and elsewhere, he formed a team led by inspector MB Goravana Kolla to nab the culprits.
On learning that some men were moving around suspiciously on Kolar-Bangarpet road, a team rushed to the spot and nabbed six people with weapons. The accused have confessed to crimes in Kolar and other places, including Bengaluru, Mysuru, Raichur, Ballari, Ramanagara Tumakuru, and parts of AP.
The accused are
Abbas Ali, Raifq Hussian, Abbas Ali, Mohammed Ali, Khaiber Sadiq, and Ali Hyder. Police also arrested Shaik Khajavali, who would allegedly receive loot from the gang and dispose it of. Another receiver - identified as Bibi - is absconding.
