Man dies by suicide in Trichy after losing money in online rummy

TRICHY: A 26-year-old man died by suicide after losing money in online rummy games. The victim has been identified as P Wilson, 26, from Gandhi Nagar in Vaiyampatti. He died at a private hospital in Manapparai in Trichy on Monday. He is survived by his wife and two children.
Preliminary investigation revealed that he was working as chef making sweets in a bakery opposite the Vaiyampatti police station. He was attracted to online rummy and has been playing for the last six months. Police sources said that due to addiction to the online rummy, he lost money and borrowed up to 3 lakh from friends and relatives.
Dejected over the debt, he failed to turn up to the work and stayed put at his house. He went to his mother’s house at Anjalkaranpatti on Sunday, where he hanged himself. Relatives noticed him and rescued him. They admitted him to a private hospital in Manapparai where he underwent treatment. But, he died on Monday. Police are investigating further.
It was the second such suicide in the last couple of days due to debts accrued by playing online rummy. On Saturday, I Ravishankar, 37, a medical assistant in the hospital at Ordnance Factory Tiruchirappalli (OFT) died by suicide at his official residential quarters as he was in debt after losing money in the online games.
