SAMBALPUR: To improve sanitation and strengthen the solid waste management system in the city, the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) will develop two more wealth centres.
Wealth centres house micro composting centre (MCC) and material recovery facility (MRF). While biodegradable waste is converted into compost in an MCC, the non-degradable garbage is segregated at an MRF. While scrap dealers collect the recyclable waste, the non-recyclable garbage is sent to a cement factory to be used as fuel.
"The two new wealth centres will come up at Themra and Nuagujatal. While civil work at Nuagujatal is complete, it is underway at Themra. Required machinery for the centres will be procured soon. Both the wealth centres will have a capacity to process 10 metric tonnes per day (TPD). We have set a target to make the new wealth centres functional within two months," said SMC enforcement officer Subhankar Mohanty.
"At present, nine wealth centres are functional in Burla, Hirakud, Balibandha, Chaurpur, Kainsir, Khandual and Rasanpur areas. With the operation of two new centres, the SMC's capacity to dispose of biodegradable waste besides segregate the non-degradable garbage will also increase," said Mohanty.
The city generates around 110 metric tonnes of waste, including around 55 MT biodegradable or wet waste, daily. Mohanty said all the households have been covered under the door-to-door garbage collection facility.
