Banjara community protesters

Hundreds of protesters belonging to the Banjara community attacked the home and office of former Karnataka Chief Minister and senior BJP leader BS Yediyurappa in Shivamogga area of the state during a massive demonstration against a recent reservation decree on Monday afternoon.

According to reports, a sea of protesters from the Banjara community descended upon Shikaripur town in Shivamogga and held a huge demonstration against the Karnataka government’s recent decision on implementing internal reservation among Scheduled Castes (SC).

Chaotic visuals of the protest show the demonstrators being baton charged by the police in order to disperse them as try to picket Yediyurappa’s house.

The protesters also set ablaze posters carrying images of BJP veteran Yediyurappa and Karnataka Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai. The agitators later staged a protest outside the Panchayat office in the town.

An official said that a policeman was also injured in the violence. He said that Superintendent of Police G K Mithun Kumar later visited the Shikaripur town to take stock of the situation, adding that prohibitory orders have been imposed in the area.

Karnataka’s Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP regime has decided to implement the AJ Sadashiva panel commission report on internal reservation among SC’s. Based on the commission’s report, the Bommai government has recommended to the Centre a new breakup of the reservation for Scheduled Castes in education and jobs.

The recommendations suggest that out of the 17 percent reservation for the SC community, 6 percent be earmarked for Scheduled Castes (left), 5.5 percent for Scheduled Castes (right), 4.5 percent for “touchables” and one percent to others.

The Banjara community has demanded the Karnataka government to withdraw the proposed amendments as they would stand to lose out if the recommendations are implemented.

In 2005, then Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) government in Karnataka had set up the AJ Sadashiva Commission to look into the need for sub-classifying Scheduled Caste reservations in the state.
