CHENNAI: Suburban commuters have been going through quite the struggle as the approach road to Thiruninravur railway station on the Chennai - Tiruvallur suburban line is ridden with potholes. Stalls set up by small-time vendors only add to the problems faced by commuters during peak hours. Residents and frequent commuters say, despite repeated complaints, the local body has not acted to repair the road and remove the encroachments.
The road, which is not very long, connects the railway station to the Chennai -Tiruvallur high road. It is used by commuters who travel to the city for work and education.
During peak hours the road is packed with commuters and the flower, fruit, and juice stalls make it difficult for people to walk. The road is not being maintained well by the municipality, and the streetlights do not always work.
Ravi S, an auto driver, says, "Indiscriminate parking by people and shop owners further reduces the space available for pedestrians."
Gokula Priya G says the vendors litter and dump wastewater on the street too.
S Murugaiyyan S from Thiruninravur Rail Passengers Welfare Association said, "Commuters should not experience hindrance to access the station. Requests were made to the ward member, chairman, commissioner, and local MLA. But no action has been taken.'
