BJP is digging the grave of democracy: Sudhakaran
Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC president K Sudhakaran has said the BJP is digging the grave of democracy. He was inaugurating the satyagraha organized by KPCC to protest against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha, at Gandhi Park in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.
“There is space for criticism in a democracy and it is seen as the lifeline of the democracy. However, we have a government which wants to silence its critics. They are not ready to accept the criticism and hence they are silencing the opposition leaders through such undemocratic ways,” said the KPCC president.
“It has to be remembered that the country has seen prime ministers like Jawaharlal Nehru who made the Communist leader AK Gopalan as the opposition leader in the Lok Sabha. Such prime ministers have been the pride of our democracy. The prestige of the democracy was that the prime ministers used to give due recognition and respect to the opposition leader,” Sudhakaran said.
Sudhakaran said the Congress, which has been in power for over five decades in the country, had always given this respect to the opposition parties. “However, now we have a government which is intolerant towards the criticism. Rahul Gandhi’s sin is that he exposed the links of our prime minister with the people who had looted the country. If the prime minister had the courage, then he should have answered to the criticisms made by Rahul instead of silencing him in the Lok Sabha,” he added.
The BJP should not be under the impression that it could silence the Congress by taking such undemocratic actions against its leaders. The Congress will not disintegrate during such situation but will rise with added vigour against the Centre. The entire country will rally behind the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, the KPCC chief added.
As part of the satyagraha, all the district committees organized the dharna in all the district headquarters. Opposition leader V D Satheesan inaugurated the satyagraha in Ernkaulam, novelist T Padmanabhan in Kannur, Ramesh Chennithala in Alappuzha, Kodikkunnil Suresh in Kollam and the Congress MPs in their respective districts.
