World’s highest railway bridge to open in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi

The world’s highest railway bridge will soon be thrown open for rail traffic over the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, officials have said.
The mega project, 35 meters taller than the iconic Eiffel tower in Paris, covers the Chenab River at a height of 359 m (1,178 ft) above the riverbed and is part of a mega undertaking to connect the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country via the Railway network.
The arch bridge Bakkal and Kauri in Reasi is part of the Rs 35,000 crore Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) and forms a vital link from Katra to Banihal.
According to officials all mandatory tests have been completed on the Rs 14,00 crore Chenab railway bridge and the mega structure is nearing completion after almost two decades since it was approved in 2003 but was delayed due to fears of stability and safety in the mountainous region.
The contract for constructing the mammoth project was awarded in 2008 and after several missed deadlines, work began on the bridge and is now nearly ready for railway traffic after passing all necessary safety tests such as high-velocity winds test, extreme temperatures test, earthquake-prone test and hydrological impacts due to water level increase.
Officials said the construction on the bridge started in 2004 but had to be suspended in 2008-09 due to fears of the safety of rail passengers in view of frequent high-velocity winds in the area.
Union Minister of Railway, Communications and Electronic and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw inspected the bridge and said that the bridge is scheduled to undergo two more tests viz running a motor trolley and bolero customised rail operation on the bridge.
Officials said the Chenab railway bridge is ready for commissioning and track lane work has been started over the bridge.
Giving details, officials said that the base of the bridge was completed in November 2017 which allowed the start of construction work on the main arch which was completed in April 2021. In August last year, the overarch deck of the bridge was completed with a Golden Joint’, paving way for the laying of the track, they said
According to engineers involved in the project, the world’s highest railway bridge will have a lifespan of 120 years and will be able to withstand winds with speeds up to 260 kmph.

In a tweet on Sunday, Washington-based Indian scribe, Lalit Jha, while sharing a video of the altercation, alleged that he was hit on his left ear with sticks by Khalistan supporters as he was covering the protest.
Jha also thanked US Secret Service for protecting him, and helping him do his job.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Jha said he mulled calling 911 as he feared for his physical safety but luckily spotted some Secret Service officers and narrated the incident to them.
Narrating his ordeal, Jha said that pro-Khalistan protesters waving Khalistan flags descended upon the Indian Embassy in presence of the US Secret Service. The protesters raised slogans in favour of fugitive Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh and Khalistan, threatened to vandalize the embassy premises and even issued threats to Indian Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
According to reports, turbaned men of all ages from various parts of the DC-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) area, descended upon the embassy and shouted anti-India slogans and pro-Khalistani speeches on microphones while also accusing the Punjab Police of human rights violations during their ongoing search for Amritpal Singh.
The Indian Embassy in a statement condemned the incident saying that the attack on Jha highlights the “the violent and anti-social tendencies of the so-called ‘Khalistani protestors’ and their supporters, who routinely engage in wanton violence and vandalism.”
The embassy said that Jha—a senior journalist working for the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency—was “verbally intimidated and then physically assaulted”. The embassy also thanked US law enforcement agencies for their prompt response.
Over the past week, Khalistan supporters have staged multiple protests outside the Indian embassy and the San Francisco Consulate—which also came under attack on March 20.
