Husband gets life in ’19 dowry death case
Gurgaon: A 28-year-old man has been given life imprisonment by the Panipat court in a 2019 case of dowry death. A woman had hanged herself to death within 15 months of her marriage due to constant harassment over dowry.
The husband was held guilty while the in-laws were acquitted in the absence of evidence against them.
Public prosecutor Kuldeep Dhull said that on May 3, 2019, Neelam (26) died by hanging due to continuous harassment and torture by her husband and in-laws for dowry. After a complaint by Neelam’s father, a case was registered under sections 498A (dowry), 304B (dowry death) and 34 (common intention) of IPC.
Sandeep Sandilya, counsel for the accused, argued that the allegation of dowry demand was not time-specific.
Rejecting the argument, the court observed, “In cases where persistent, continuous and repeated demands for dowry and harassment become a routine affair for the bride in her matrimonial house, then it becomes difficult to give exact time, date and month of such demands and harassment.”
