Surrender & join probe: Akal Takht jathedar to Amritpal
Amritsar: Akal Takht jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh on Saturday urged fugitive Amritpal Singh, chief of Waris Punjab De (WPD), to surrender and face the legal process.
The biggest question in the hearts of Sikhs across the world was why Amritpal couldn’t be arrested despite the huge police force, said Giani Harpreet, adding that if Amritpal had already been arrested by the police, then the government should clarify his status. “There is a big question mark on the functioning of police,” he observed.
“And if he is out, then he should surrender and join the investigations,” said the Jathedar, adding that Amritpal should tell the police to ask what it wants to ask and what it wants to do. At the same time, the jathedar said the Punjab police should be considerate. “Our youth didn’t commit any heinous crimes as is being portrayed,” he said.
Expressing concern over the arrests of Sikh youths, he said that Punjab police had arrested many Sikh youth from their homes, conducted raids, and spoiled their careers, which was unacceptable.
“The police had violated their right of expression and they should think about it,” he said, adding that the youth were being put behind bars only for sharing or uploading comments on social media.
