SILCHAR: An 18-year-old girl was hacked to death in broad daylight allegedly by a youth, who happened to be her neighbour, with a sharp weapon at Dalgram village of Kaliganj in Karimganj district on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Monoara Begam. She was a student of higher secondary first year in the Kaliganj Public Higher Secondary School. Her blood-stained body was recovered from a hill top covered by jungle at a distance from her house.
A senior police official said the accused, Jaber Ahmed, has been arrested.
The sharp weapon that was used for the murder was recovered from the nearby jungle on Saturday after a massive search operation by the police led by SP (Karimganj) Partha Pratim Das.
Kaliganj police outpost in-charge Jaychandra Singh said following interrogation, the arrested youth was produced before a court in Karimganj on Saturday. The court sent the accused to police remand.
Singh said an investigation has been launched to find out the circumstances behind the brutal killing of the girl and also involvement of other people in the murder.
So far, it's suspected that the murder is triggered by a feud between the two families. However, police are yet to find the actual reasons, he said.
