MANGALURU: To encourage wet waste management at source, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) had introduced 50% discount in solid waste management (SWM) cess for all property owners, who have functional compost making units in their premises. However, the online property tax payment portal has no option for property owners to avail the discount.
Many property owners, who have been converting wet waste into compost in their premises, are waiting for the MCC to rectify the technical error and avail the discount in the Self-Assessment Systme (SAS) tax payment portal.
A property owner told TOI that he could not find an option on the online property tax payment portal to avail discount on SWM Cess.
“Our apartment in the city have onsite compost making unit and none of the flats have been handing over waste to the city corporation’s workers. We are processing wet waste on our premises. All residents in our apartment have been given certificates by the MCC to avail 50% discount on SWM cess. However, it is not being accepted by MCC's online payment portal. Many residents have already paid the property tax for the year 2023-24 without availing the discount on SWM cess,” he said.
Recently, the MCC had hiked the property tax in the city as per a government order. As per the new rule, property tax is being calculated based on the latest guidance value of the property, he said.
“Earlier, my property tax was Rs 2,800 per month, which includes Rs 960 as SWM cess. Since I have been processing wet waste at source, I am eligible to receive 50% on the SWM cess. However, the portal still shows Rs 960 as SWM cess,” he said.
When contacted, chief whip of the MCC council Premanand Shetty said the technical issue will be sorted out. “Property owners will have to visit the revenue section of the MCC to enter their SWM cess discount eligibility certificate on the portal. Thereafter, the portal will automatically apply the discount on SWM cess,” he added.
