Sham call centre busted in Gurgaon; owner, 8 employees held

GURGAON: Police on Thursday busted a fake call centre in Sushant Lok 1, where the accused allegedly cheated foreigners after offering them technical support.
The call centre, according to police, was operating from the basement of a rented house in C block, where they conducted a raid and arrested nine people, including six women.
“SHO of Cyber police station Jasvir Singh received a tip-off on the illegal call centre, following which he conducted a raid at the spot along with his team. On reaching the spot, police found men and women working on computers and laptops. They were busy making calls to foreigners. When the cops asked the owner for the licence provided by the department of telecommunications or any other agreement, he failed to provide any,” said ACP Preet Pal Sangwan.
Cops nabbed the owner, Mayank Sharma and eight other people, who were identified as Mukesh, Arun, Nikita, Aayushi, Himani, Ritika, Kulvinder Kaur and Jahnvi Shrivastavafor fraud and sections under the IT Act. During questioning, it was revealed that Sharma had been operating the call centre for the past eight months.
“The accused revealed that they cheated foreigners by sending them pop-ups and misleading them in the name of providing customer support service on behalf of different companies,” added Sangwan.
