Guwahati: Ahead of the three-day Assam visit by the full bench of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in view of the delimitation exercise, the Centre on Friday clarified in the Lok Sabha that there is no provision to increase the number of existing assembly or parliamentary constituencies in Assam.
This was stated by Union law minister Kiren Rijiju in a written reply to a question asked by Congress MP from Assam Pradyut Bordoloi.
Assam has 14 Lok Sabha constituencies, while the number of assembly constituencies in the state are 126.
The ECI team is scheduled to visit the state from March 26 to 28 to supervise and monitor the ongoing delimitation exercise for redrawing the territorial boundaries of the parliamentary constituencies and assembly segments.
“The Election Commission of India has been entrusted to undertake the delimitation exercise in the State of Assam under the provisions of section 8A of the Representation of People Act, 1950 (43 of 1950) and section 9 of the Delimitation Act, 2002 (33 of 2002). The provisions of articles 82 and 170 (3) of the Constitution of India and the Delimitation Act, 2002 (33 of 2002) provide for the delimitation exercise on the basis of 2001 census,” Rijiju said.
