Virendra Sachdeva gets full charge of Delhi BJP unit
Delhi BJP working president Virendra Sachdeva
new delhi: After serving as Delhi BJP’s working president since its defeat in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi polls last December, Virendra Sachdeva was handed complete command by BJP president JP Nadda on Thursday.
“I will not betray the trust that Prime Minister Modi has placed in an ordinary worker of Delhi. We will work for the party’s organisation and ensure its victory in the Lok Sabha elections,” said Sachdeva, whose family came as refugees from Pakistan and initially lived in Chandni Chowk before moving to east Delhi.
Senior party functionaries said that during his tenure as the working president, Delhi BJP efficiently took on AAP over the issues of corruption. “It also gave a tough challenge to AAP on electing the MCD mayor and Standing Committee members. Under his leadership, the party also won the Haj Committee chief’s post,” said a functionary.
Party sources said another reason behind Sachdeva’s elevation was that he was from the Punjabi community. “Punjabis in Delhi have traditionally been our supporters, but in the recent polls, the party performed dismally among them,” said a source. BJP had lost all seats in west Delhi, which has a sizeable Punjabi population, in the assembly polls and failed to win several Punjabi-dominated seats during the MCD polls too.
Sachdeva, in politics since 1988, is also a RSS worker and was preferred to other office bearers and contenders due to the party’s performance in east and northeast Delhi. He himself lives in the east and was given the responsibility of northeast Delhi areas during the recent elections, and the party did well in both areas during the MCD polls. bec
He had held the posts of vice-president of Delhi BJP, and vice-president and general secretary of the Chandni Chowk unit. He became the district president of the Chandni Chowk unit in 2007 and was elected the president of the Mayur Vihar unit in 2014.
In 2020, when he was made the vice-president of Delhi BJP, he was rewarded for carrying an extensive ration and food distribution work in east Delhi during the pandemic lockdown.
