Councillors: Solve water scarcity in central zone
Coimbatore: Issues pertaining to water scarcity and growing mosquito menace dominated the central zone council meeting on Thursday.
As almost all the councillors started highlighting the water scarcity in their wards, chairperson Meena Loganathan was forced to ask them to speak about other issues as well.
P Mariselvan, councillor from ward 80, said they were not able to face the residents’ questions on water scarcity and urged the authorities to act before people could organize and stage protests, bringing bad reputation to the government.
S Saravanakumar, councillor from ward 69, urged the officials to plan in advance to meet water crises, as it was occurring every summer. “They should plan now to mitigate it next summer. Next year will be crucial because of the parliamentary elections.”
Meena Laganathan urged the officials to ensure equality in water supply to all areas, as otherwise the residents would be discontent.
Another major issue that was discussed at the meeting was the bad condition of roads that were dug up for drinking water connections. The councillors said a meeting should be convened with the higher officials of Suez to find a solution to the issue.
The councillors also urged the authorities to increase fogging to curb mosquito menace. R Vairamurugan, councillor from ward 31, said adequate equipment and chemicals for fogging were not available in his ward.
Health officials assured the councillors that adequate equipment and chemicals would be made available. “Fogging will be conducted at least once in a day,” they said.
