GURGAON: After a brief break, the city is in for another round of showers on Friday under the impact of a fresh western disturbance.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Gurgaon is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall on Friday. A yellow alert has been issued for the city. Thunderstorms and lightning, as well as gusty winds with speeds between 40kmph and 50kmph have been forecast. There is also a possibility of hail in isolated areas, IMD said.
On Thursday, the daytime temperature rose by two degrees within 24 hours. The maximum temperature was 29.3 degrees Celsius, against 27.6 degrees Celsius the previous day and a notch below the season's normal. The minimum temperature dropped from Wednesday's 14.7 degrees Celsius to 13.9 degrees Celsius. The city received intermittent showers between March 16 and 20, taking the month's cumulative rainfall tally to 40.3mm, a surplus of 352%. Normally, the city receives 8.9 mm rainfall between March 1 and 23.
According to the IMD, a western disturbance is affecting the area due to a cyclonic circulation over Iran and neighbouring areas. "Under the influence of these systems, light to moderate intensity rainfall is expected over many parts of Haryana, including Gurgaon, on Friday. Though rainfall is likely to lessen in intensity on Saturday, isolated areas in northern Haryana may witness patchy showers. There will be no significant change in maximum temperature for the next three days, and a rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius thereafter," said Manmohan Singh, director, IMD (Chandigarh).
For Friday, the IMD predicted partly cloudy skies with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. The minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 15 and 27 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The city's air quality index (AQI) improved within the 'moderate' category on Thursday. The overall reading was 116, compared to 145 a day earlier.
Meanwhile in Delhi, the day temperature crossed 30 degrees Celsius on Thursday. It is expected to dip again on Friday as IMD has forecast rain and gusty winds. Mercury remained below the 30-degree mark for five consecutive days till Wednesday.
The maximum temperature on Thursday was recorded at 30.5 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature on Thursday settled at 14.8 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal. The relative humidity oscillated between 37% and 92%.
Delhi's air quality remained in the 'moderate' category with an overall AQI of 151. According to Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi, AQI is likely to remain 'moderate' from Friday to Sunday.
