Rajkot: A woman lost her life here in the wee hours of Thursday because of dog menace. Nayna Gondaliya, 50, died after falling from a running bike that was chased by a dog. She was riding pillion.
According to police, Nayna and her husband Manji, residents of Paras Park Society on Kothariya Road, started off on a bike around 5.30am to attend a religious function at Golida village.
After some time, a stray dog started chasing their bike and grabbed the border of Nayna’s sari in its mouth.
When the woman tried to pull the sari back, Manji lost the balance and both fell down on the road.
Nayna received head injuries. She was rushed to a private hospital, from where she was referred to Civil Hospital where she died.
Aji dam police registered a case of an accidental death and sent Nayna’s body for postmortem. Her husband Manji is a diamond worker.
In Rajkot, every year around 10,000 people report dog bite incidents at government hospitals, though the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has been spending anywhere between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 8 lakh every year on dog sterilisation over the past 10 years.
According to sources in the civic body, they do not have the details of those people who take treatment at private hospitals.
RMC claims the civic body has completed sterilisation of more than 90 per cent of dogs in the city, which is the highest among four major municipal corporations in the state.
