The case was filed against Rahul Gandhi by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison on Thursday in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surname by a court in Gujarat's Surat. However, he was granted bail and his sentence was suspended for 30 days to let him appeal the decision.
The case was filed against Mr Gandhi by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi for saying "How come all thieves have the common surname Modi?"

The BJP claimed that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is also "failing legally" after a Gujarat court verdict on Thursday held him guilty in a 2019 criminal defamation case. A court in Surat sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail in the case filed on a complaint by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi for his alleged remark, "How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?" BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said Mr Gandhi should consider what he says, particularly while using words that may be construed as being disrespectful about a community or person.

Congress MLAs created noisy scenes in Jharkhand Assembly today over the sentencing of Rahul Gandhi by a Gujarat court and holding BJP responsible behind the judgement. Congress lawmakers trooped into the well of the House and raised slogans like 'BJP ki Hitlarsahi Nahi Chalegi' (BJP's Hitler-like rule will not work).
