GUWAHATI: The NIA special court, Guwahati, sentenced a cadre of the now-disbanded National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) to life imprisonment in connection with a 2014 case of indiscriminate firing on villagers in
Assam's Kokrajhar district, which resulted in the death of seven civilians and grievous injuries to two.
The court convicted Rabi Basumatary alias Rongjabaja alias Rabi under various charges of IPC and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, on March 13 and pronounced the sentence on Tuesday.
The NIA, in a press statement issued on Wednesday, said on May 1, 2014, Rabi, along with six other NDFB cadres, had entered Balapra village under Gossaigaon police station of Kokrajhar district of Assam, where they opened indiscriminate fire on the villagers on the instructions of top NDFB leadership headed by G Bidai and Songbijit.
In this regard, the special NIA court had registered a special case in 2015. Rabi was arrested in 2016 and chargesheeted by the NIA in March 2017 through a supplementary chargesheet.
The original chargesheet in the case was filed in Gossaigaon against one accused Pradip Brahma alias Pwler in August 2015. The second supplementary chargesheet was filed in October 2019 against another accused, Upen Basumatary alias Usaobadao, while a third supplementary chargesheet was filed in January 2021 against the remaining accused persons who have been absconding.
