NASHIK: Yukta Rokde, the young mother who had claimed that an unidentified woman had killed her four-month-old daughter, had in fact killed her own baby by slitting her throat with a kitchen knife, said deputy commissioner of police Kiran Kumar Chavan.
Police were able to crack the case after three inspector-rank officials questioned Rokde for several hours on Tuesday. The 24-year-old woman eventually confessed that she had killed her daughter, Dhruvanshi. Police arrested Rokde, a science graduate, on Wednesday and have lodged an FIR under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
According to Chavan, Rokde told the police that she did not like the fact that the child was closer to her husband, Bhusan Rokde, and her mother-in-law. "She told us that Dhruvanshi used to be in a joyful mood whenever she was with her father or grandmother. But that was not the case when the baby was with her mother," said Chavan.
What apparently frustrated Rokde more was that everyone said Dhruvanshi resembled her father. "On Monday evening, when her mother-in-law and brother-in-law (Rajendra Sonawane) had gone to the market for half an hour, Rokde killed her daughter," said Riyaz Shaikh, the senior PI of the Gangapur police station. The police said the woman was also upset because her husband consumed alcohol every day.
