Man arrested after brandishing knife in East Lansing released to hospital

EAST LANSING — A man who police said brandished a knife near Michigan State University’s campus was released to a hospital after being arrested and has not been charged with a crime.

“That subject was released yesterday to a local hospital," East Lansing Police Department Capt. Chad Pride said. Pride said he couldn’t clarify the nature of the man’s hospital stay but said that he didn’t sustain any injuries.

The man was seen Wednesday afternoon with a knife at a business in downtown East Lansing, after which he entered campus and shortly after returned to the downtown area, police said. MSU police sent out an alert just before 1 p.m. “reporting a person was seen with a knife at or near West Circle Drive.” Authorities told students to shelter in place if nearby.

Police received a report of the incident at 12:27 p.m., just over half an hour before the initial alert was sent to MSU community members. Pride said that the supervisor who responded to the call wasn’t able to pass along the information until the scene was safe, leading to the delay in the initial alert.

“We don't have a specific communications person in the department that has access to get that stuff out right away.” he said. “A lot of times when I'm notified that the scene is safe, and we can put something out, it can be some time after the incident occurs.”

“We're trying to do our best to get that information out as quick as possible, but sometimes just unfortunately, due to other factors, we're unable to get that out right away,” he said.

Pride did not specify which businesses were involved in the altercation or arrest, but he said the incident began at a business on the 500 block of Grand River Avenue and the arrest occurred in the 200 block.

After the alert was released with a description of the man, police received a call from a witness in the area who saw a man matching the description enter a store at about 1:18 p.m. He was apprehended after exiting the store, Pride said. Police sent out an alert saying the suspect was in custody at about 1:25 p.m.

Pride said that no injuries were reported and that the man appeared to not make contact with any other individuals during the incident. He said he couldn’t comment on the nature of the dispute that led to the man brandishing his knife.

Pride said the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office would determine whether any charges will be filed.

The man taken into custody is not the same man who students shared concerns about earlier this year, Pride said. That man was seen wearing a black plastic mask and carrying a hammer and scissors in the downtown East Lansing area. ELPD said at the time that they had communicated with the man and his family members and would continue to “monitor” him.
