DIBRUGARH: Absconding Waris Punjab De leader Amritpal Singh’s uncle Harjit Singh was brought to the Dibrugarh Central Jail on Tuesday morning.
Harjit, who is considered the brain behind the meteoric rise of Amritpal, was brought to Dibrugarh from Guwahati by road under heavy security cover. Earlier, a special flight carrying a team of Punjab Police along with Harjit landed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) in Guwahati at 8.40pm on Monday. From the airport, he was brought to the Dibrugarh Central Jail by road covering a distance of 458 km.
A convoy of 7 police vehicles alongwith the separatist leader reached the Dibrugarh Central Jail at 7.10 am on Tuesday. Sources said the special flight bringing Harjit was initially supposed to land at the Dibrugarh Airport on Monday evening but had to be diverted to Guwahati due to bad weather conditions.
Harjit, who has been booked under the National Security Act (NSA), had earlier surrendered before the Punjab Police amid the ongoing crackdown against Waris Punjab De activists. As per reports, Harjit was involved in the transport business in the UK and Canada, but joined his nephew, Amritpal, after he came to India in August 2022. Harjit also played the role of manager and was also in charge of Amritpal’s finances, as per reports.
Hours after Harjit was shifted to the Dibrugarh jail, a Vistara flight with two more operatives of the Waris Punjab De landed at the Dibrugarh Airport around 11.20am.
The two, identified as Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal and Gurinder Pal Singh, were brought to the Dibrugarh jail with full security at 11.45pm.
