GURGAON: Four youths drowned in a lake in Nuh when the boat in which they were taking a selfie capsized on Tuesday evening. One of the youths managed to swim to the shore. The others, police said, did not know swimming.
The four youths who died were identified as Mustaq (23), Shaqib (17), Sahil (15) and Nazakat (19), all from Akera village of Nuh. Around 3.30pm, they had gone for a walk around the Kotla lake when they saw the boat anchored to the shore.
They pushed the boat into the lake and started rowing it towards the middle, police said. When all of them gathered in one corner of the boat for a selfie, it could not bear the weight and overturned. The four drowned, while Yaseer (15) managed to swim to safety.
Out of the lake, police said, Yaseer shouted for help. A villager passing by the area heard the screams and rushed towards the shore. The police were informed. A team reached the spot with fire fighters and divers.
The four were fished out of the lake after around 40 minutes and rushed to the government medical college in Nalhar, around half an hour away. All four were declared dead on arrival.
“Soon after we got a call, we rushed a team to the spot. Fire fighters and divers were also taken along. We have initiated an investigation under Section 174 CrPC. Their family members have been informed and their bodies would be handed over to them after the autopsy,” said Sachin Kumar, the investigation officer.
