Man taken into custody near MSU after incident

EAST LANSING — Police took a man into custody Wednesday after Michigan State University and East Lansing police issued alerts to the public about a suspect with a weapon.

MSU police said that an assault occurred off of Michigan State University's campus after alerting students that a person with a knife was seen on campus.

"The assault was initiated off campus and officers remain in the area attempting to locate the subject," MSU police said in subsequent alert. "At this time the secure in place is being lifted. There is no longer believed to be an imminent threat to campus. Report any suspicious activity to law enforcement."

Officials had previously advised those in the area to secure-in-place and report unusual or suspicious activity to the Michigan State University Police.

Police about 1:25 p.m. said they had taken a man into custody.

East Lansing police said in an alert that the agency was investigating a complaint of a weapon in the 500 block of E. Grand River Avenue.

MSU police earlier said the man was seen at or near West Circle Drive and is described as a tall man. He was described by witnesses as wearing a gray hoodie, black mask, black pants and a beige coat. He was last seen around Grand River Avenue and Ramp 6.
