HAVERI: In a gut-wrenching incident, a female stray dog sat in front of her dead puppy’s body for around six hours on the old National Highway-48. The incident happened at Valmiki circle in Haveri on Tuesday.
The dog sat the whole night near its puppy’s body on the road. The puppy was killed in a lorry accident on Monday late at night. The workers of the city municipal council (CMC), Haveri buried the carcass on city outskirts.
“It was really sad. I could see how much the mother dog cared about its puppy. It didn’t want to leave its puppy’s dead body even for a second. It followed us while the puppy’s dead body was being buried. She keeps staring at the spot on the highway where her pup died. I was in tears when I saw the mother dog mourning,” said Ramesh, a civic worker.
Vehicle density has drastically increased in the old National highway-48, so several animals have been killed as some drivers tend to speed up.
“Drivers should take care not to hurt animals,” Ramesh appealed. “Commuters should drive carefully and respect lives of animals,” said Nagaraj Balehosur, a range forest officer.
