David Jones Jr., son of Humana founder, leaving Humana board after 30 years

The son of David Jones, famed founder of Humana, one of Louisville's largest employers, is stepping down from the company's Board of Directors.

David Jones Jr. was elected to the Humana Board of Directors in 1993. He is the longest-serving board member, but according to a proxy statement filed by Humana to the Securities and Exchange Commission on March 8, Jones Jr., is not up for reelection to the board.

Dan Hartlage, the principal for Guthrie/Mayes Public Relations, who is helping promote Jones Jr.'s father's autobiography, confirmed his plans to step aside.

The next election for the Humana Board of Directors will take place during the company’s annual meeting on April 20.

As of March 1, Jones Jr. was chair of the Nominating Governance and Sustainability committee, a member of the Organization and Compensation committee as well as the Executive committee.

The proxy statement filed on March 8 indicates Jones Jr., is the only director that will have retirement benefits since he was first elected to the board prior to 1997 when the rule regarding retirement benefits for non-employee board members changed.

James O'Brien is also not up for reelection to the board.
