GURGAON: Several areas in the city continued to witness intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms for the third consecutive day on Monday. Strong winds with speeds of up to 30kmph persisted throughout the day. The city received heavy downpour around 7pm.
There is a possibility of light rain in isolated areas on Tuesday. However, the wet spell is far from over, as another western disturbance is likely to impact from Thursday evening which will cause light-to-moderate rainfall on Friday. With intermittent rainfall for the past five days, the city has been witnessing excess rain of 201% with a cumulative rainfall of 25.6mm as against 8.5mm recorded between March 1 and 20.
Since the rain commenced after 7pm, Monday's rainfall measurement data will be updated on Tuesday morning.
"Under the influence of western disturbance, the ongoing rainfall at many places over Haryana is likely to continue for next 12-18 hours and reduce thereafter. Some passing showers may be witnessed on Tuesday at isolated places. However, another fresh western disturbance may affect the region from March 23 and as a result, another spell of rainfall activity will be experienced on Friday," said Manmohan Singh, director, IMD Chandigarh.
On Monday, cloudy skies coupled with strong winds brought down the temperature from Sunday's 27.1 degrees Celsius to 25.5 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, 11 Delhi-bound flights were diverted to Lucknow and Jaipur due to a severe thunderstorm over parts of Haryana on Monday, officials said, adding the capital recorded heavy rains in the evening.
IMD had issued an 'orange' alert for Monday, however, it only rained towards the evening, thus the net rainfall couldn't be recorded, weather officials said. According to analysts, the current weather conditions that caused showers will start weakening, thereby reducing the intensity of rains from Tuesday onwards.
