NEW DELHI: Five days after a 14-year-old girl alleged that she was kidnapped, thrashed and molested by three boys in northeast Delhi's Bhajanpura, investigations have revealed that the girl had harmed herself and gone away on her own as her social studies exam did not go well.
Scared that her parents would scold her, she bought a packet of chips and a blade and inflicted the injuries on herself only to tell police that some boys had tried to harm her.
On March 15, police received a call regarding the assault. The girl alleged that three boys had stopped her near a school in the afternoon and one of the boys caught hold of her hand and they physically assaulted her. A case under sections of kidnapping, causing hurt, molestation and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) was registered.
A team of police officers investigating the case reached the place of occurrence as pointed out by the girl, however, no one had seen the girl or her being kidnapped despite it being a crowded area. Cops then scanned CCTV footage from various cameras near the spot and in one of those, the girl was seen roaming around alone. Since the girl had her Class X boards going on, police spoke to her after her exam on Saturday.
"During the course of investigation, CCTV footage near the place of occurrence as identified by the victim was checked, and it was found out that no such incident took place at the place and time told by the victim. The victim was again counselled and examined after which she stated that her exam of social studies had not gone well and she was afraid that her parents might be disappointed. She had caused the injury to herself and narrated the concocted story to her parents," said Joy Tirkey, DCP, North-East.
The girl was produced before the magistrate concerned and her statement was recorded. Police will now file a cancellation report with regard to the case.
