Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal

As the row between the Centre and the Delhi Government escalates over the budget issue, Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday slammed the Centre over their objections in Delhi’s assembly. The Delhi CM in his attack on the Centre claimed the bases of the objections to be meritless.

Delhi CM in his attack also termed objection by the Centre to be unprecedented and further highlighted how no Central Government has violated the tradition of no objection and halted the budget of any state. Kejriwal then pointed out the objections cited by the Centre and claimed that 20,000 crores were allocated for infrastructure, whereas 500 crores were allotted for advertisement in the Delhi budget.

He further questioned how 500 is more than 20,000 and lashed out at the Centre and claimed that they have illiterate people from top to bottom. The statements by Arvind Kejriwal came after the home ministry reportedly said that the AAP government’s budget proposal had hiked the allocation of advertisement as compared to the low funding for infrastructure.

The Centre had also sought an explanation from the Delhi Government over the budget for the proposed expenditure in the budget.

Finance Minister Kailash Gahlot while talking to the media also thwarted the Centre’s claim and said that of the 78,800 crore budget, 22,000 crores was allocated for infrastructure whereas 550 crores were allocated for advertisements.

As per the reports, the Delhi Government has resubmitted the budget to the ministry and the AAP Government will announce Delhi’s budget tomorrow.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also wrote to the Prime Minister on Tuesday and asked Prime Minister Modi why he hates the people of Delhi. In his letter, Kejriwal also urged the PM of letting the Delhi Budget be passed. CM Arvind Kejriwal also highlighted that objection by the Central Government is unprecedented.

The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, issued an order in the case of the electoral bonds scheme and listed the matter for examination if the constitutional bench should preside over it on April 11. The Apex Court bench constituting CJI DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha heard the case.

As per the reports, the petitioner’s counsel advocate Shadan Farasat contended before the Court that the matter is of Constitutional importance and has the power to affect the nation’s democratic polity in the county.

Farasat also commented that the case requires an authoritative rulling. Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave, who also represented one of the petitioners, said that they will only benefit if a constitutional bench hears the case.

Court asked the Centre if they want to contend the submission by the petitioner of referring the case to a constitutional bench. However, the Centre’s counsel told the Court that Attorney General R. Venkataramani, who wasn’t in attendance for the Centre, would have to argue if referring the case to the constitutional bench should be made.

After the submissions of the Centre and the petitioner were made, the Apex Court scheduled the case to be heard on April 11 in order to assess whether petitions should be referred to a constitutional bench.

The Centre, in October 2022, had told the Supreme Court that the electoral bonds scheme is an absolutely transparent mode of political funding. However, a recent report by Association for Democratic Reforms wrote that more than 66% of the total income of seven national parties in 2021-2022 came from unknown sources.

As per the reports, the Supreme Court in March 2021 denied putting a stay order to the sale of electoral bonds ahead of elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry.

BRS leader K Kavitha

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter K Kavitha on Tuesday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for the third time for questioning in the alleged Delhi excise policy scam.

On her way to the agency’s office, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader flashed some of her mobile phones kept in a transparent sheet to the media persons and said she was going to submit them to the ED. She said she was submitting all the old phones to the ED which she may have used in the past.

K Kavitha also wrote a letter addressing the ED officials. In a letter, she stated that these phones are submitted without prejudice to her right and contentions and larger contention about whether a women’s phone can be intruded, upon in the teeth of her right to privacy.

She further called ED questioning a political agenda and accused the federal probe agency of putting false allegations about her. She further mentioned in the letter that for the record, the first time she was called by the agency was in the month of March 2023, therefore, she has reasons to believe, that accusations made against her in November 2022 were not only malafide, misconceived, but also prejudicial.

It is unfortunate that a premier agency like the Enforcement Directorate is becoming privy and party to these acts and sabotaging and sacrificing its sacrosanct duty of free and fair investigation at the altar of vested political interest, said K Kavitha who appeared before the ED in the national capital for questioning for the second day in a row.

The ED is questioning K Kavitha on the basis of statements made by Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Pillai after he was arrested last week. Arun Pillai and some of the others arrested are key associates of the South Cartel group, which received kickbacks from the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy.

Former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi and Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia is currently under judicial custody. He was arrested on February 26 in connection with the Delhi excise policy scam.
