PATNA: A 20-year-old woman, Pooja Kumari, was allegedly killed for dowry by her husband and in-laws at Chesi village under the Naubatpur police station area in rural Patna late on Saturday evening, police said. Pooja's family members alleged that she was killed by her in-laws as they failed to give Rs 2 lakh as dowry.
Pooja, daughter of one Jyoti Kumar of Bihta, was married to Ritesh Kumar (22), a resident of Naubatpur, in 2021. A complaint was registered against Pooja's husband and his father, mother and two uncles at Naubatpur police station.
Pooja's father told the police that after marriage, his daughter was being harassed for dowry by her in-laws. "A few days ago, Pooja's husband demanded ₹2 lakh as dowry from his father-in-law. When he expressed his inability to fulfill their demand, they threatened Pooja with dire consequences," the police said.
SHO of Naubatpur police station Mohd Rafiqur Rahman said all the accused were absconding. "Raids are on to nab the accused," he added. Rahman said when Pooja's father could not reach his daughter over the phone on Saturday, he contacted her in-laws, but did not get any response. "Later, Jyoti received a call from Pooja's in-laws and told that she had died. When he reached their house, it was locked and no one was there," the SHO added.
