Optiemus Electronics forays into laptop manufacturing, to make 1 lakh 4G laptops for Primebook by FY24
As part of the partnership, Optiemus will be manufacturing around 1 lakh laptop units for Primebook by end-FY24. OEL, which already manufactures products in mobile, wearable/hearable and telecom equipment segments in India, also aims to strengthen its capabilities with further expansion into other categories of consumer electronics.
NEW DELHI: Contract manufacturer Optiemus Electronics Monday said it has partnered with homegrown laptop brand Primebook to manufacture its latest 4G laptop.
“The collaboration marks OEL's foray into the laptop manufacturing market, beginning with the ground-breaking Primebook 4G, an Android 11-based laptop for students and learners,” said Optiemus Electronics in a statement.
According to the statement, Primebook has witnessed “remarkable success” in the B2B category over the last four years and aims to expand in the B2C category further.
The affordable Primebook 4G laptop will primarily serve tier 2 and tier 3 cities. As for specifications, the Primebook 4G has 11.6 inches HD screen with 1366x768 pixels resolution, 4 GB LP DDR3 RAM and 64 GB eMMC storage, 10 hrs of battery life, a 2MP camera and PrimeOS (Android 11) operating system.
They reasoned that most manufacturers have slack capacities that first need to be used up before committing to expansion at a time when global PC and tablet sales have been steadily declining.
“In the last few years, we have strived towards diversifying our expertise in electronics manufacturing, and now with Laptop manufacturing apart from hearables/wearables category and telecom equipment, we are looking to expand our operations significantly. We are glad to have Primebook on board with us and look forward to contributing in their growth story,” said A. Gururaj, MD, Optiemus Electronics.
“We are excited to have Optiemus Electronics with us as our manufacturing partner which will further strengthen our stance to revolutionize the affordable laptop category for youth in India. The partnership will also help us to position ourselves as purely an Indian brand and help reduce production costs with indigenous manufacturing,” said Aman Verma, Co-Founder of Primebook.
Primebook laptops are originally priced at Rs 16,990 but will be available on Flipkart for Rs 14,990 with purchase benefits such as no cost EMI available for up to 24 months, free Microsoft 365 Personal 6 months subscription, and iPrep Educational Content Subscription for 1 Year (1st to 12th Class), according to the statement.
ATC, which recently took a $411.6 million (about Rs 3,374 crore) impairment charge due to cash-strapped Vi’s partial payments, has further warned that it would be forced to take more similar charges amidst the India telco’s financial woes.
"Right now is the investment phase. Monetization will come from our side...To me, right now, we have to create a base and right now we are only focused on the rollout of the 5G network. And do keep in mind that there's already offload happening from the 4G network to 5G, which will also improve the 4G quality," said Mittal.
