Amritpal Singh News Live: To prevent any untoward incident in case of the arrest of absconding Sikh radical preacher Amritpal Singh, head of 'Waris Punjab De', who has been declared a 'fugitive', the police along with CRPF personnel on Sunday conducted flag marches across Punjab. Punjab Police are planning to book Amritpal Singh under the provisions of the National Security Act (NSA), sources privy to the development told IANS. In the interest of public safety, the government extended the suspension of SMS and mobile Internet services, except the voice call, till Monday noon.

Pakistan govt mulling legal options to declare PTI a banned outfit

Pakistan Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has hinted that legal proceedings could be initiated to declare Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) a banned outfit, state media reported. Rana said that the legal team of ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was examining the matter in light of several revelations that could lead to a reference being filed against the party, Express Tribune reported. He however clarified that it is ultimately up to the courts to officially ban a political party.

The Delhi Police on Sunday reached the residence of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with a notice issued to him over his “women are still being sexually assaulted” remark made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. The police team headed by Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Sagar Preet Hooda arrived at Gandhi's 12, Tughlaq Lane residence, officials said. Taking cognisance of social media posts, police had sent a questionnaire to the Congress leader and asked him “to give details about the women who approached him regarding sexual harassment".

A manhunt was still on to nab radical Sikh preacher and Khalistan sympathizer Amritpal Singh, police has said. "He is now a fugitive and we are looking for him and we will soon arrest him," Jalandhar Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal told reporters near Nakodar in Jalandhar late Saturday night. Chahal said six to seven gunmen of Amritpal Singh have been arrested. The Punjab government had on Saturday launched a major crackdown against Amritpal, with police arresting 78 members of an outfit headed by him, officials said.

About 800,000 people willing to join military to fight US: North Korea claims

North Korea claimed that about 800,000 civilians have volunteered to join the nation's military to fight against the US, CNN reported. North Korea's state newspaper Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported that around 800,000 students and workers alone have expressed their desire to join the military to counter the US. The claim came after North Korea on Thursday launched its Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in response to ongoing US-South Korea military drills, reported CNN.

Midsize US banks ask government to protect all deposits: report

A coalition of midsized US banks has asked federal regulators to guarantee all of their customers' deposits for two years, even above the usual $250,000 limit, to avoid contagion after Silicon Valley Bank's collapse, Bloomberg reported Saturday. The measure would "immediately halt the exodus of deposits from smaller banks, stabilize the banking sector and greatly reduce chances of more bank failures," the Mid-Size Bank Coalition of America (MBCA) argued in a letter to authorities, according the report. The recent failures of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Signature Bank have caused a crisis of confidence in the industry.

Pakistan-Afghanistan allow bus service between Peshawar-Jalalabad

Pakistani and Afghanistani authorities agreed to initiate the bus service between Peshawar in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province and Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, The Express Tribune reported. According to the Pakistan daily citing the sources and documents, the decision was taken in a meeting of the Afghanistan International Coordination Cell, which aimed at resolving the issues between the two countries. Australia has "absolutely" not vowed to support the U.S. in a conflict over Taiwan in return for U.S. Virginia-class submarines, Australia's Defence Minister Richard Marles said on Sunday. Strong earthquake kills at least 13 in Ecuador, 1 in Peru

A strong earthquake shook southern Ecuador and northern Peru on Saturday, killing at least 14 people, trapping others under rubble, and sending rescue teams out into streets littered with debris and fallen power lines. The U.S. Geological Survey reported an earthquake with a magnitude of about 6.8 that was centered just off the Pacific Coast, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Guayaquil, Ecuador's second-largest city. One of the victims died in Peru, while 13 others died in Ecuador, where authorities also reported that at least 126 people were injured.
